Chapter Nine

“Max has mentioned shifting his career to something that isn’t so behind the scenes after his current project is finished, but he’s so good at what he does, I think he wouldn’t be happy,” Dana Grace said. “Things have worked out fine for us because I can work at the orchard, and we had our time together at the campground. We’ll have to see what we can work out.”

“I think Uncle Samuel and Aunt Virginia would never mention to anyone that they had an additional guest at the house,” Wren said.

Dana Grace furrowed her brow. “No one in the family around here knows we’re married or even that he exists.”

“Uncle Samuel is the grandson of Andrew Jackson Hudson, who was trusted by one of the most talented bootleggers of all time, and Aunt Virginia is the granddaughter of a respected sheriff. You and Max will be safe.”

“You have such a different way of seeing things; I like it. I’ll run it past Max and have an off-the-record conversation with Aunt Virginia and Uncle Samuel.”

“A possibility is that we talk to Virginia and Samuel together; maybe I’m the one with an undercover person named Justin. It would be a way to feel them out.”

“We could do that. I’ll check with Max; he’ll be apoplectic, but he’ll get over it.” Dana Grace grinned.

“Best case is that the campground didn’t flood, and we just had an interesting hypothetical discussion,” Wren said as Samuel opened the door, and Virginia and Rascal came inside.

Rascal hurried to his water bowl and took a long drink.

“Rascal insisted on going with me and ran the entire way. I couldn’t coax him into the utility vehicle to ride,” Samuel said.

“He’s always been like that; maybe it’s his Husky side that runs with the sled.”

“I didn’t think about that; I was worried about making an old dog run, but he was loving it.”

Wren giggled. “Old? He’s only four.”

Samuel shrugged. “Maybe I’m the old dog that couldn’t have run it, so I worried about him. Are we ready to go?”

“I’m staying,” Virginia said. “I have a lot to catch up on, including baking.”

“Ready, girls? Are you going, Rascal?”

Rascal trotted to the back door.

“I’ll ride in the back with Rascal.” Wren opened the door for Rascal then climbed in next to him.

On the way to the campground, Wren gazed at the flooding along the swollen creeks and the litter of toppled trees caused by the saturated ground that could no longer support their roots against their heavy, rain-soaked leaves.

She stared at a wooden bridge over a creek at the bottom of a hill that had been partially washed out by the now-ebbing flood.

Wren said, “Dana Grace, do you see the baby goats splashing in the puddles next to the small house at the top of the hill?”

They’ll rebuild their bridge and be okay.

Dana Grace peered out her window. “Baby goats have the right idea, don’t they?”

After they crested a hill, the severity of the flooding of the campground came into view.
